“GO TO YOUR STUDIO
AND MAKE STUFF”
— Fred Babb
Studio sweet studio
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working— Pablo Picasso
This space has seen more bad dance moves than you could imagine.
When setting up my studio, it was important for me to have a work space that felt warm and cozy, where I would be happy flinging paint and not worrying about where it lands. But just as crucial: it needed to be a place where I could reflect on my current pieces and relax.
Luckily, our sunny renovated garage wonderfully fits the bill!
How do I know when the painting is done?
This is a question abstract artists often get asked, and many say it’s difficult to answer. Here’s my take on it: The painting will always lead me to where I need to go, whether that’s making a few minor changes, or covering the entire canvas with white gesso and adding more layers. In the end, I know a painting is done when I can say yes to the the questions below:
Do I like it?
Would I hang it on my wall?
Do I want to share it with others?
When I can put my mark on it and call it mine, proud to see it hanging in a home, that’s when I know my painting is done.
